Ernie Chattin, Former Parks Official, Dies
Ernie Chattin, who helped direct Kentucky's recreation and park system in the 1950s and '60s, died yesterday at King's Daughter's Medical Center in Ashland. He was 82.
In 1965, Chattin was named Mr. Recreation of Kentucky by the Jefferson County Youth Recreation Association for outstanding leadership.
A naive of Hinton, W.Va., he was a leader in promoting track as a sport in Kentucky high schools and was a member of the state Track Committee for 20 years.
As YMCA director in Ashland, Chattin developed the recreation program there and later became the YMCA's national aquatic director. He also was director-consultant to the Ashland City School Recreation Commission.
During the 1931 season, he was assistant coach and quarterback for the Charleston Trojans pro football team. He was a teacher, coach and athletic director at various schools - including Ohio University, Ashland Community College, Ashland High School and Ashland Junior College - for more than 50 years.
Chattin was a member of the Ashland Tennis Commission, the Ashland and Boyd Couny park boards, the Kentucky and National Recreation and Parks societies, the Ashland City Commission and the Ashland Board of Education. He was also commissioner of the regional American Softball Association and a recretion consultant for Elmwood Village Nursing Home. He was a former president of the Rotary Club and a member of the First Baptist Church.
He also was a board member of the Boyd County and state of Ohio Red Cross, an executive board member of the Kentucky Fellowship of Christian Athletes and chairman of the Ashland Invitational Tourney board of directors.
His survivors include his wife, the former Helen Manley; a daughter, Jennie Lee Mulcahy of Henderson; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday a Steen Funeral Home, with burial in Ashland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.
