GREEN
Thomas Havens Green, 81, of Georgetown, died Saturday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington, after a short illness. He was a retired former owner of Green's Cleaners in Georgetown, a former basketball and football coach at Garth High School, Georgetown, and a former referee of high school basketball.
Born in Fleming Co., July 7, 1914, son of Oscar Roe and Viola Havens Green. Graduated Kavanaugh High School, Lawrenceburg in 1933 and from Georgetown College in 1938. All-State football and basketball player at Kavanaugh in 1932. Was named best all-around athlete at Georgetown College in 1937 as captain of football and basketball teams.
Basketball and football official for high school and college games from 1940-1948. Was youngest man ever to referee high school state basketball tournament when he worked 1940 tourney.
Coached basketball at Crab Orchard, KY in 1941 and refereed in KIAC tournament in 1940s. Coached basketball at Garth High School, Georgetown 1949-1955. His basketball teams compiled a 100-25 won-loss record and he led Garth to its first-ever appearance in the state basketball tournament in 1953. His Garth football teams won 31, lost 19, and had four ties, including an undefeated 9-0 season in 1953. He was the first athlete to play in a state basketball tournament, officiates at a state tournament, and then coach a state tournament team.
Served in US Army in South Pacific during World War II. Owner-operator of Green's Cleaners in Georgetown from 1956 to 1982. He was a member and deacon of First Christian Church, Georgetown, member of Oleika Shrine Mt. Vernon Lodge #14 F & AM, associate member KY Sheriff's Association and member Longview Country Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene Young Green. Survivors include his two children, Sallie G. Slone and William T. Green, both of Lexington; four grandchildren, Rusty Slone, Lexington, Bette Slone Robinson, Bowling Green, Chris Wallace, Manitowoc, WI, Maggie Green, Lexington; a great-grandson, Sage Wallace; a dear and special friend, Nora Belle Hall, Georgetown; two sisters, Mrs. A.B. (Dorothy) Rudy, Noblesville, IN and Mrs. James (Jo Anne) Clayton, Grand Rapids, MI.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Johnson's Funeral home by Rev. Scott Cox and Judge George H. Lusby. Burial will be in the Georgetown Cemetery. Casket-bearers will be the four grandchildren and Bill Robinson, Molly Kelley, Aaron and Jason Wilhoite, Rich and A.B. Rudy, Jr. Honorary pallbearers, former players of "Coach" Green, are Gordon W. Moss, Basil Duke Owens, George H. Lusby, J. Clay McKnight, John E. Toncray, Lewis F. Hoffman, R.C. Covington, David Cottrell, Billy Mitchell, Jack Mitchell, Jack Kennedy, Joe Johnson, Jr., Robert Gumm, Charlie Grote, Dr. Warren Nash, Bill Wilson, Thomas K. Shuff III, Ronnie Rich, Billy Bruin, and his assistant coach, Smack McFarland.
