Elmon Vernier, School Health Head
Elmon L. Vernier, retired director of health and physical education in the city school system, died of cancer yesterday at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center.
A memorial service for Dr. Vernier, who was 75 and lived in the first block Knoll Ridge court, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Jenkins funeral establishment, 4905 York Road.
He retired in 1973 from the city school post which he had held since 1940, a period in which interscholastic athletic programs became a part of the regular school budget rather than being financed through gate receipts.
Before coming to Baltimore, he was a physical education teacher and director of health and physical education in New Rochelle, N.Y.
He was a frequent lecturer, consultant and visiting instructor at such schools as Columbia University and the John Hopkins University.
The author of many published professional papers, he also was one of the authors of a textbook, "Administration of Health Education and Physical Education."
He was a former president of both the Maryland and New York associations of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
In addition he was a former vice president of the American Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and of its Eastern District.
He was the recipient of several awards for his work from these groups as well as one from the Maryland Council of Supervisors and Directors of Physical Education and another from Little League Baseball.
Until his death, he was a member of the national board of directors of the baseball organization, which is based in Williamsport, Pa.
Born and raised in Butler, Ind. he graduated from the University of Michigan before earning his master's degree and doctorate a Teachers College at Columbia University.
During World War II, he served in the Army as a captain and was assigned to supervise a rehabilitation program for wounded soldiers of the Chinese Army in the China-Burma-India theater.
He is survived by his wife, the former Bertha Moeller; two sons, Elmon L. Vernier, Jr., of Chadds Ford, Pa., and Rufus Vernier, of Gaithersburg; a sister, Margaret Roberts, of Auburn, Ind., and three grandchildren.
The family suggested that memorial donations be made to the Little League Foundation, in Williamsport.
