Samuel Chalfie Arbitrated Labor Disputes
Lawyer was basketball ref

KENWOOD - One day, when Cincinnati lawyer Samuel L. Goodman was walking down the street, he encountered two other lawyers - each of whom represented opposing interests in a labor dispute.
"They suggested to each other, 'Why don't we let Sam Chalfie resolve it for us?'" said his son, James J. Chalfie of Wyoming. "And that's how he got started. From that, he developed an interest and he handled labor arbitrations all across the county."
Mr. Chalfie - a labor arbitrator for 40 of his nearly 60-year law career - died Saturday of heart failure at Kenwood Terrace. A resident of the Season in Kenwood, he was 94.
Born in Cincinnati in 1911, he grew up in Avondale, where he began working as a delivery boy when he was 10. He graduated from Hughes High School in 1929 and went on to Ohio State University, where he received a varsity letter for managing the conference championship basketball team in 1933.
While in college, he spent his summers supervising Hoffman Park in Walnut Hills. He developed close relationships with the families whose children played in the park and "always felt that experience contributed greatly to his success as a private practitioner in law," his son said.
Mr. Chalfie received a bachelor's degree from OSU in 1933 and graduated from the UC College of Law in 1936.
"One of the highlights of his life was being a basketball referee," his son said. "After college, he became a professional basketball referee while attending law school and refereed local high schools and colleges."
Mr. Chalfie spent his career practicing with small firms, including 24 years with his son. But he was most proud of his labor arbitration work.
He was appointed to the rosters of the labor arbitrators of the Federal Mediation and Concillation Service and the American Arbitration Association. He also served as chairman of the arbitration committee of the Cincinnati Bar Association and as a lecturer on arbitration at the UC College of Law. Mr. Chalfie retired in 1993.
He was a member of the National Academy of Arbitrators and past chairman of its Ohio/Kentucky region.
He was also a past president of board of the United Jewish Cemetery and a member of the board of trustees of the Isaac M. Wise Temple, service as president of the Temple Brotherhood.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Marcus Chalfie, in 1999.
In addition to his son, survivors include a daughter, Emily Bowman Leikin of North Palm Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation is 10 a.m. today followed by the funeral at Well Funeral Home, 8350 Cornell Road in Symmes Township. Interment will be at United Jewish Cemetery in Montgomery.
