Atherton Chief of Athletics Dies
Ralph Mills, Former Coach, Had Gall-Bladder Operation
Ralph Howard Mills, athletic director at Atherton High School, died at 6:30 p.m. yesterday at St. Joseph Infirmary. He was 55.
Mills entered the hospital April 15 and underwent a gall-bladder operation Tuesday, relatives said. He had been having recurrent attacks since last fall, they said.
Mills became athletic director at Atherton in March of 1956. He came to the school as head basketball coach and assistant football coach in 1950, the year Atherton became coeducational.
He had been coaching more than 25 years. In 1941 he was named "Coach of the Year" by Kentucky coach while head football coach at Hopkinsville.
He compiled outstanding records at Hopkinsville from 1937 to 1949. His teams won 23 consecutive games from 1939 to 1941, and were ranked among Kentucky's top 10 teams from 1939 to 1949.
During World War II, he was in the Air Corps, and missed the football seasons of 1942, 1943, and 1944.
Mills was a native of Opelika, Ala. He coached at Louisa, and Wayne, W. Va., before going to Hopkinsville. He resigned in 1949 to become head football coach at Vero Beach, Fla., but left there after a year to come to Atherton.
Starred at Georgetown
While coaching at Atherton, he helped develop Charley Tyra, a graduate of the school who became a basketball All American at the U. of L.
Mills was graduated from Georgetown College, where he starred in football. He lived at 108 Forrest Court.
Survivors are his wife, the former Virginia Ferguson; three daughters, Mrs. William Hughes, Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. Clayton Foster, Hopkinsville, and Miss Elsie Michele Mills; two sons, Ralph J. and Eric Harris Mills; three sisters, Mrs. Irving Trost, Birmingham, Mrs. Fred Duran, Auburn, Ala., and Mrs. H.A. Yarlington, Waco, Tex.; a brother, Charles Mills, Birmingham, and two grandchildren.
A private funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Pearson's 149 Breckinridge Lane. The body will be cremated.
