John Malcolm Laney, ex-Tide official, dies
Funeral will be Tuesday for John Malcolm Laney, a former assistant athletic director at the University of Alabama and a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
Mr. Laney, 77, of Tuscaloosa, died Sunday.
He coached at the University of Alabama for 15 years and was assistant athletic director for several years. He graduated from the University of Alabama where he played basketball and baseball. He was a member of the 1930 Alabama basketball team which won the SIAA [sic] Championship. He also attended and played football at Birmingham-Southern College.
Mr. Laney was a football coach at Woodlawn High School and a Southeastern Conference football and basketball official. A field representative of the University of Alabama Alumni Association until his retirement in 1972, he served for a time as interim director of alumni affairs at the university.
He was founder and owner and operator of Camp Laney for Boys at Mentone for 20 years. A native of Riverside, he was a graduate of Phillips High School.
A member of First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa, he was a member of the A Club, the University Club, Tuscaloosa Country Club, Alabama Senior Golf Association, Eastern Senior Gold Association, the United States Golf Association, Tuscaloosa Quarterback Club, Tuscaloosa Exchange Club, and Central Investment Club.
Funeral will be a 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with burial in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park, Hayes Chapel directing.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Louise Stapp Laney; a daughter, Mrs. Joe G. Burns Jr., Tuscaloosa; a son, John Malcolm "Skip" Laney Jr., Birmingham, and two brothers, Joan Blair Laney and Phillip Walton Laney, both of Birmingham. The family suggests memorials be made to the Hospice of West Alabama, American Cancer Society or the church.
