Ju Burghard Dies Tuesday
Julius E. "Ju" Burghard, county official and former noted football umpire, died suddenly Tuesday night at St. Dominic Hospital where he had been taken for surgery.
Secretary to the Fourth district supervisor of Hinds County, Mr. Burghard was a former athlete, coach and athletic official of national reputation.
He had during his career officiated in every major Bowl game in the nation.
He is survived by his widow and two sons, Ralph B. Burghard of New Orleans and Julius "Bo" Burghard of Clinton, and by one brother, Louis Burghard of Crystal Springs.
A native of Georgia, Burghard had live practically all his life in Clinton. He was a graduate of Miss. College, where he was a three-sports varsity letterman, football, basketball and track.
He was a high school coach at Pace and a junior college coach at Clarke where his teams successfully opposed four-year college teams.
He went into the sporting goods business as a salesman and later owner of his own store. He was a football and basketball official who worked his way into the top brackets.
Annually he would umpire 10 to 12 Southeastern Conference football games and two dozen Conference basketball tilts, and always went to a major bowl game on New Year's Day.
Physical impairments forced him into retirement from active officiating and he helped organize the junior college and high school officials associations, and he served as executive secretary for these groups.
After the death of Mike Conner as commissioner of the Southeastern Conference official association, Bernie Moore became commissioner and under the new setup, Burghard was proposed as secretary of the conference officials association. George Gardner was elected over him by a one-vote margin.
After further physical disabilities, Burghard had been a deputy sheriff and finally secretary to the district supervisor.
He had been in poor health recently but continued to work. He was seized with a heart attack Tuesday afternoon and expired at the hospital seven hours later.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete Tuesday night.
