James J. 'Jimmy' Osborne, 76, Roman, St. Joe Basketball Great

James J. "Jimmy" Osborne, a member of St. Joseph's University Basketball Hall of Fame and a former college basketball official, died Monday. He was 76 and lived in Rydal, Montgomery County.
The 6-foot Osbone, who played under coach Billy Marward at Roman Catholic High School from 1925 to 1928, scored more than 200 points in his senior year - considered high for that era - when he was named to the All Catholic and All Penn Tournament first teams.
He captained the St. Joseph's College basketball team in 1932 when he and teammate Phil Zuber led the Hawks to an upset victory over the University of Pennsylvania.
He was a member of the St. Joseph's University Basketball Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Old Timers Basketball Hall of Fame.
Osborne, who was raised in the city's Fairmount section, played the Penn A.C. after finishing college. He began officiating college basketball in 1933 and continued until 1956.
He was one of the founding members of the Markward Basketball Club, which honors Philadelphia-area basketball players, and was active in the Roman Alumni Association and the St. Joseph's University Alumni Association.
He coached basketball at St. Joseph's Prep in 1935 and 1937.
"He was a great guy," said longtime friend Dutch Doyle. "He helped everybody and was one of the most well-liked guys in the Philadelphia area. He was a mild-mannered sort of person who knew when to talk and when not to talk. He could listen and give good advice."
He had been employed as director of the Mid-Atlantic District of the Steel Division of Trans American frieght Co.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Bennis; four sons, James John, Joseph and Michael; a sister, Nancy McDonald; and six grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Hilary of Poitiers Roman Catholic Church, 920 Susquehanna Road, Rydal, where friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham Avenue above Easton Road, Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County.
