Ex-Mayor, Postmaster Henry Shanklin Dies; Funeral Tomorrow
Funeral services for Henry Davis Shanklin, 71, of 615 Seventeenth Street, former mayor and retired Ashland postmaster, will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Lazear Funeral Home. The Rev. William H. Jennings will officiate, and burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
Mr. Shanklin, one of Ashland's most widely-known citizens, died at 8:05 a.m. Sunday at the residence following an extended illness.
A native of Clark County he was born February 19, 1889, a son of the late Henry Davis and Catherine Hughes Shanklin, and had been a resident of Ashland for 60 years.
He was elected mayor in November 1939, and resigned December 30, 1943 to accept the appointment of postmaster, a position he held until retiring March 1, 1959.
During Mr. Shanklin's term as postmaster, the Ashland Post Office receipts tripled and growth included extensive expansion and renovation.
Mr. Shanklin was active in civic, religious and fraternal organizations in the community. He was regarded as one of Ashland's greatest amateur athletes, having excelled in baseball, football, basketball, and tennis and in 1953 was the second person to be elected to the Ashland Sports Hall of Fame. A graduate of Ashland High School where he was active in sports, he played as a "ringer" on several college football and baseball teams although he never attended college. [JPS note there is evidence he played football for Morris Harvey in WV for a time circa 1911.] He played forward on the Ashland YMCA basketball team.
He was one of the incorporators and served as president last year of the Ashland Historical Society and presently was president of the Old Timers Club, an organization of citizens who have resided in Ashland 50 years or more.
He was a member of the Ashland Board of Trade; a member and past exalted ruler of Ashland Lodge No 350, B.P.O. Elks; a member and past president of the Ashland Ambassadors Club; a director of the local YMCA; past potentate and recorder emeritus of El Haza Shrine Temple; a member of Page Lodge No. 325, F. & A.M.; a past high priest of Apperson Chapter No. 81; past commander of Ashland Commandery No. 28 a member of Everett Council No. 63; a member of the Indria Consistory Orient of Kentucky. A Kentucky Colonel, he was a member of the First Methodist Church and served on its board of trustees. He was a past president of Ashland Rotary Club and had a perfect attendance record of 22 1/2 years until he became ill in December 1958.
He first was employed with the Adams Express Company and later became a teller and auditor with the Second National Bank. Before being named postmaster, he operated the Standard Oil Service Station and garage at 1700 Carter Avenue.
The body is at the funeral home where friends may call after 4 p.m. today.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Blanche Kilgore Shanklin; two sons, Dr. Robert E. Shanklin, of Delaware, a member of the faculty of Ohio Wesleyan University, and Dr. Henry D. Shanklin III, a member of the faculty of Butler University in Indianapolis; two sisters, Misses Sue and Edith Shanklin of Ashland; and nine grandchildren.
