Jeweler, Former CHS Coach, Stricken at 65
H. Earl Young, 65, owner-operator of Weaver Jewelers, 19 N. Paint St., and widely known former Chillicothe High School basketball coach died at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday in Chillicothe Hospital where he had been admitted Tuesday following a heart attack.
For the last several years Mr. Young had been in failing health but had managed to spend a few hours or so at his store up until Tuesday.
Mr. Young retired from coaching in 1946 after winning the South Central League championship to climax a remarkable 23-year span as a coach here, and entered the jewelry business as a minority partner of the late Walter Weaver.
Upon Mr. Weaver's acquisition of a jewelry business in Greenwich, Conn., and his departure from the city, Mr. Young assumed the management. In 1953, he obtained the minority interest and following Mr. Weaver's death purchased control of the business which was incorporated with his becoming president, treasurer and manager.
Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Young retained an avid interest in sports, particularly basketball, of which he was a keen student. Upon his retirement at the end of the 1946 season, in which CHS marked up 16 victories against no defeats in regularly scheduled games, Mr. Young was honored at a school banquet and toasted for his prowess as a coach.
During his 23 years, CHS won several district titles and competed twice in state tournament play at Columbus. He had few seasons that victories did not far outweigh defeats. The zone defense which CHS set up on the small floors at first the old Central School Gym and later the Arch Street School Gym, was an ever-constant puzzle to visiting teams.
Mr. Young attended Ohio State University and came here as a commercial teacher and coach from Munhall, Pa., where he launched his teaching career.
Born in Stafford on Dec. 4, 1899, he was the son of Howard O. and Maggie McVay Young. On June 25, 1928, he married Nelle C. Motter, who survives at their home, 350 Fairway Ave. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Merle (Luicle) Morrison of Berkley, Mich., and a nephew, Roger Morrison of Long Island, N.Y.
Mr. Young was a member of the Rotary Club, all Masonic bodies here, and the Ross County Alumni Association of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ware's Funeral Home with the Rev. Benjamin F. Judd Jr. officiating and burial in Grandview Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Friday.
