Obituary - Anchorage Daily News (April 21, 2015)

Bernard was born in Atlanta, Ga., on Nov. 25, 1948, to the late Robert and Dorothy Jackson. On Wed., March 25, 2015, he transitioned to his eternal home. Bernard married the love of his life, Tonnette Johnson, on Sept. 11, 1992. He shared his love with stepdaughters, Letisa Johnson and Janet Ross, and grandchildren, Jaana and James.

He entered the Army in 1967, a year after graduating from Booker T. Washington High School. He earned a certificate from the United States Logistics Institute and graduated from the United States Army Sergeant Major Academy in Texas in 1989. Bernard retired from the Army in July 1995, as an E9, Sergeant Major after 28 years of service.

Bernard officiated high school sports for more than 40 years. His officiating career started as a high school junior. He worked football, basketball, softball and track and field events at the George Washington Carver Boys and Girls Club. Once in Alaska, Bernard became a regular in officials' stripes for numerous sporting events. He was a member of many community and sporting organizations, including the National Association of College Officials, the National Federation of Sports Officials, the Anchorage Football Officials Association, the Disabled American Veterans Association, American Legion Post 28, VFW 10252 and the Anchorage Chapter of the NAACP. He was also co-owner and president of Sports Officials, Inc., a sports officiating contracting firm. He was part of the Great Alaska Shootout, Anchorage's annual Thanksgiving celebration of college basketball, since its inception in the late 1970s. He worked the Shootout as both an on-court official and member of the organizing board.

After retiring from the U.S. Army, Bernard continued his professional career with First National Bank of Alaska. There, he was Vice President of the Property division from 1996 until retiring in 2012. Bernard was a board member of Brotherhood, Inc., a non- profit organization of Black professionals whose mission was philanthropy and volunteerism. Bernard loved the game of golf. He not only loved playing the game with his buddies, he enjoyed growing the game by serving as President of The First Tee Alaska. His passion of the sport inspired many of his friends and other generations to learn the game.

He was a man of great integrity and his word was his bond. His love for his family and friends was undeniable. If you were his friend, you were a friend for life. Bernard leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Tonnette Jackson; stepdaughters, Letisa Johnson and Janet Ross; two grandchildren, Jaana and James; mother-in-law, Wilhelmina Johnson; five sisters, Sarah, Delores, Joann, Gail and Doris and husband, Gaines; two brothers, Alfred and wife, Joanne and Anthony and wife, Renise; sisters-in-law, Anne and husband, Howard, Carol and husband, Ricardo and Chris; brothers-in-law, William and wife Janice, James and wife Fanne', Brent and wife Claudette and Gregory; and a host of nieces; nephews; relatives; and friends.

The Jackson family and friends will host a celebration of life on Friday, April 24, 2015, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., at the VFW Post 10252, 3105 Mt. View Dr. in Anchorage, Alaska.
