A.J. Robertson, Bradley Athletic Director, Dies
A.J. Robertson, for 28 years athletic mentor at Bradley University, Peoria, Ill., died today of a liver ailment in St. Mary's hospital. He was 57.
Robertson was Bradley's athletic director, and until he became ill last spring, coached and school's football, basketball and baseball teams.
His teams won 28 Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships. He was best known nationally for his Bradley basketball teams which participated three times in invitational tournaments in Madison Square Garden, New York.
Robertson coached Bradley football teams won 27 straight games counting from the start of the 1924 season.
A native of South Haven, Minn., Robertson started his college sports career in 1913 with the University of Minnesota freshman team. Spare time play on a semi-pro squad resulted in his ineligibility for further Big Ten competition. He went to Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., where he starred in football, basketball and baseball for two years. At the University of Montana in 1915, he became one of the nation's great quarterbacks.
Before coming to Bradley in 1920, Robertson coached at Georgetown College in Kentucky and at Hays, Kan., State Teachers College. He started at Bradley in 1920.
Robertson retired as basketball and football coach last spring after his illness became apparent. He continued as director of athletics and baseball coach.
He is survived by his widow, two sons, James and William, and two daughters, Mrs. Lois Weidner, Newport, R.I., and Mrs. Marjorie Peterson, Peoria.
