Miss. Hall of Fame Member Dies at 70
COLUMBUS - Funeral services for Kenneth Porter Gatchell, 70, were held at 3 p.m. Friday, from the Gunter and Holmes Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery, Ala. at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Mr. Gatchell, a renowned sports figure of the 1920's, died Thursday afternoon at Columbus hospital. A graduate of Mississippi State University where he made a name in football and track, he went on to a place on the 1924 Olympic Track Team. His record in discus throwing stood for a decade before it was broken. He was later a University of Mississippi track coach. Prior to his death, he was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
Following his graduation from MSU, he went on to do graduate study at Cornell University and Northwestern University.
At the time of his death, he was a retired rancher and real estate broker. In 1965, his Polled Hereford Ranch held the highest dispersion average. He was a past president of the Lowndes County Cattlemen's Assoc., past president of the Mississippi Polled Hereford Assoc. and a past president of the American Polled Hereford Assoc. He was also a co-founder of Sawan Inc.
Mr. Gatchell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice James Gatchell.
