Former UA Standout, Jim Whatley, Dies
ATHENS, Ga. - Jim Whatley - a Tuscaloosa native who became a four-sport letterman at the University of Alabama and later a longtime coach at Georgia - was buried Sunday. He died Thursday of heart failure at age 88.
Whatley was part of the Georgia athletic department for more than 25 years. He was a head coach in baseball and basketball and an assistant in football.
After three seasons in the NFL with the Brooklyn Dodgers and a stint playing minor league baseball, Whatley served in the Navy during World War II.
He began coaching in 1946 at the University of Mississippi and was hired as Georgia's basketball and football coach three years later.
He made his mark at Georgia in baseball, leading the Bulldogs to Southeastern Conference championships in 1953 and 1954 and the SEC East title in his final season in 1975.
The Bulldogs did not win either title again until this season.
Born in Tuscaloosa, Whatley earned 10 varsity letters at Alabama - three each in football, basketball and baseball and one in track.
He was a star tackle on the 1934 football team that beat Stanford in the Rose Bowl.
He is survived by his wife, Eddie Lou Young Whatley.
