INDIANA TRACK COACH IS DEAD
E.C. "Billy" Hayes, Prominent Athletic Figure, Dies of Pneumonia at Age of 59
BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Dec. 16 - (AP) - E.C. (Billy) Hayes, head track coach at Indiana university for 19 years and developed of some of America's greatest distance runners died of pneumonia in a Bloomington hospital today at the age of 59.
Hayes had been ill several days, but death came only a few hours after his removal to the hospital.
As head of Indiana's cinder squads since 1924, Hayes had developed such outstanding performers as Don Lash, former holder of the world two-mile record, Charlie Hornbostel, Tommie Deckard, Campbell Kane and Sid Robinson. Among his best products in shorter distance events were Roy Cochran and Ivan Fuqua.
Born near Madison, Ind., he was graduated from Albion College, Albion, Mich. in 1910.
Hayes' coaching career began at Jackson, Mich., high school where he served a year. In 1912 he went to Mississippi A&M to coach basketball, track and football. There he won prominence as coach of several Olympic track stars.
GRID COACH, TOO
From 1924 to 1931, Hayes coached track at Indiana. He took over the football helm in 1931 after the retirement of "Pa" Page and tutored the Hoosier gridders two years in addition to his regular track duties. He was succeeded by A.N. (Bo) McMillin the present football coach, in 1933.
Appointment of four Indiana trackmen to the All-American team selected by Daniel J. Ferris, secretary-treasurer of the Amateur Athletic Union, was one of the highlights of Hayes' coaching career. The selectees were: Kane in the 880-yard run, Archie Harris in the discus, Cochran in the 440-yard hurdles and Fred Wilt in the two-mile.
Surviving is a daughter living in Bloomington. Mrs. Hayes died several years ago.
