Charlotte Wimp & Daisy McCallum's Scrapbooks
Charlotte "Shrimp" Wimp & Florence "Daisy" McCallum |
Charlotte Wimp (whose name was often condensed to "Shrimp") and Florence "Daisy" McCallum both attended the University of Louisville starting in the Fall of 1913 and played for the women's basketball team during the time a the school. They both created scrapbooks during their college years which are available through the University of Louisville digital collections library. While the scrapbooks are fascinating in their own right, they provide particular insight into the early years of the University of Louisville basketball teams, both men's and women's since they obviously spent time together and on some occasions, took trips together where they played double-headers again opposing colleges (accompanied by a chaperone naturally).
This included a road trip to Lexington Ky where the two teams played against the Kentucky Wildcat's men's and women's teams, and provides some rare behind-the-scenes photos of trips on the train and walking around campus. Other trips included to Danville Ky to play Kentucky Women's College (KWC) (sister college to Centre College), Cincinnati to play the University of Cincinnati and elsewhere.
McCallum's album is especially interesting as she was a talented sketch artist and created a number of humorous sketches, including ones depicting a game between the U of L boys and girls teams, which suggest something more than basketball was at play.
Directly below are links to the full scrapbook albums. Please allow time for the items to load as they are quite large.
The rest of this page provides some noteworthy photos and illustrations along with items of particular interest to the Kentucky-Louisville basketball rivalry.

Train travel was extremely common at the time. The above is a very rare glimpse into the travel accommodations as the women's team travels to Danville Ky to play Kentucky Women's College (KWC) |
Not sure if the April Fools is the Date or something else |
Photos of the University of Cincinnati campus including on bottom photo an interesting angle of the Cincinnati gymnasium (Schmidlapp Gymnasium) overlooking the football field from atop a hill. |
Apparently the Team travelled to and from Cincinnati via the Ohio River on the ship "City of Cincinnati". |
Kentucky vs. Louisville Rivalry
Daisy McCallum's sketch depicting emotions surrounding the UK-UL Rivalry. What it means is anyone's guess |

Daisy McCallum sketch of "Shrimp" Wimp crying at the door of the Registrar's office, presumably a family emergency. Also shown is an interesting depiction of Louisville administrator Eckart Von Walther working the telephone along with the Daniels brothers (John and Roy), both members of the Louisville men's basketball team, ready to serve as chauffeurs. |
The U of L Men's vs. Women's Game
 |
Scorecard from an Exhibition game held between the Louisville Men's and Women's team held on March 5 (or 6?) 1914. According to the score card the "Fellows" beat the "Girls" 40 to 14 in a game held at the Louisville Y.M.H.A. gymnasium, although the goal scoring doesn't seem to square with the reported score. |
