Colonial Conquest:
Kentucky
defeated
George
Washington
70-55
in
its
1st
round
in
the
Maui
Classic.
After
the
1st
2
minutes
of
play,
Kentucky
led
for
the
rest
of
the
game,
although
sloppy
play
towards
the
end
permitted
GW
to
erase
much
of
the
earlier
scoring
margin
held
by
the
Cats.
A
3
by
Edwards
put
Kentucky
up
permanently
at
5-4.
The
lead
was
extended
to
8-4
after
a
Sheppard
FT
and
Mohammed
turnaround
shot.
GW
stayed
within
2-4
pts
until
Turner
hit
Edwards
for
a
beautiful
lob
dunk
to
make
it
12-8
(Turner
became
airborne
too
soon,
and
Edwards
really
had
to
reach
to
make
the
catch)
and
Turner
had
a
drive
to
make
it
14-8.
Later
Padgett
hit
a
pair
of
FTs
to
make
it
18-12.
Kentucky
scored
the
next
13
straight
pts
to
go
up
31-12
after
an
Evans
pass
for
a
Bradley
dunk.
Rogers
of
GW
finally
hit
a
3
to
end
the
scoring
drought,
with
Bradley
and
Mescheriakov
finishing
the
scoring
for
each
team
as
the
Wildcats
managed
a
33-17
halftime
lead.
GW's
leading
scorer
had
only
4
pts
by
intermission.
In
the
3rd
period,
Mohammed
made
1
of
2
FTs
to
make
it
36-20,
and
when
Edwards
hit
Padgett
for
a
layup
to
make
it
38-20,
the
Colonials
appeared
rattled
and
called
a
timeout.
UK
had
its
largest
lead
of
the
night
at
43-21
when
Sheppard
made
a
pair
of
FTs,
but
the
Cats
appeared
to
relax
a
bit
and
allowed
GW
to
close
to
within
43-27
before
Mills
hit
a
3.
Bradley
and
Mescheriakov
concluded
3rd
quarter
scoring
with
a
12
footer
and
a
19
footer
respectively,
to
make
it
52-32
UK
after
3.
Tenacity in the 4th allowed GW to cut the margin to 55-39 after an Eyal long 2, and a Rogers long 3 later made it 57-42. Turner hit a 3, then Rogers (all of 5'4") made an incredible drive through the lane and avoided all blocks to hit a FG making it 60-44. When Rogers hit another long 3 (UK was guarding well at the 3 pt line, but Rogers was a good 1-2 steps farther out) made it 61-47, and an Iturbe put back closed it to 61-49. A few minutes later an Iturbe layup closed it to 64-53, but that was as close as George Washington would get during their rally. Turner made 1 FT and Mills made 2, then Turner got a dunk and it was 69-53 with only minutes left. Iturbe got a tip in basket, and Sheppard made 1 FT to finish the scoring, and Kentucky survived a rather poor shooting night to win 70-55.
