Dr. Nelson Rites Today
Services for Dr. Oscar Gustaf Nelson, 87, a retired Nashville physician and former missionary, will be at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Second Presbyterian Church.
Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Nelson died Monday night at Belcourt Terrace Nursing Home after a long illness.
The body is at Roesch-Patton, Dorris and Charlton Funeral Home.
A native of Florida, he was a son of the late Wilhelmina Wahlstrom and Gustav Robert Nelson, who were both Swedish by birth.
He attended public schools in Mobile, Ala. and was graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1911. He served as captain of the college basketball team and received four letters in basketball and two in track. In 1915 he received his M.D. degree from Vanderbilt Medical School.
Immediately after graduation, he was married to Miss Henrietta Sperry, and they went to China as medical missionaries under the board of missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. They served in China until 1926. Mrs. Nelson died in 1971.
Nelson practiced medicine in Nashville for over 40 years and served as team physician for the Vanderbilt freshman basketball team for many years.
He was an elder in the Second Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school for over 25 years. He was a general and orthopedic surgeon and a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Nashville Academy of Medicine and the Tennessee and American Medical Associations.
Survivors include a daughter, Miss Faith Nelson, Nashville; two sons, Dr. Henry Sperry Nelson, Maryville, Tenn., and Charles A. Nelson, Nashville; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the Oscar Gustaf Nelson Scholarship Fund at Vanderbilt University.
