Oscar H. Gunkler Dies; Former College Educator

Oscar Henry "Occie" Gunkler, former chairman of the Berea College physical education and health department, died yesterday at Berea Hospital. He was 91 and lived on Blue Ridge Court in Berea.
Mr. Gunkler, an educator for more than 40 years, was a member of Berea's physical education and health department from 1930 to the early 1970s.
He coached the college's track, basketball and swim teams for several years, and introduced soccer as an intercollegiate sport in Kentucky.
In 1996, The Seabury Center's Gunkler Natatorium at the college was named for him.
Mr. Gunkler was a past president of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Kentucky Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation. He was a former vice president of the Southern District of the American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
Mr. Gunkler founded the Berea College Folk Club, a dance group, and received a National Dance League Award for A Dance Drama of Kentucky, which he wrote and produced.
He was born in Rochester, N.Y., and held bachelor's and master's degrees from Springfield College in Massachusetts and a doctor of education degree from the University of Kentucky. He was a World War II veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Ora Edna, Wyatt Gunkler; a son, Robert Alfred Gunkler of Frankfort; three daughters, Carol Ann Gunkler Johnson of San Antonio, Barbara Jane Stevenson of Atlanta and Susan Jacqueline Bingham of Chicago; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Union Church in Berea. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Home in Berea.
