Duce Belford is Dead
Was Longtime Creighton Coach
OMAHA (UPI) - Creighton University Athletic Director J.V. (Duce) Belford died Tuesday night in Veterans Hospital here. He was 58.
Belford had been confined to the hospital since early June. Creighton basketball coach Red McManus was with him when he died.
Belford began his athletic career at Creighton as equipment manager and freshman football and basketball coach.
He moved up the ladder to basketball coach and finally became athletic director.
At times, Belford also served as baseball coach and a physical education instructor.
Belford also scouted for the old Brooklyn Dodgers.
Rex Barney, an Omahan who made the major leagues, was signed by Belford.
Survivors include his widow, Rita, and two daughters, Mary Rita, 9 and Paula 7.
