Frank Keaney, URI Rams Coach, Dead at Age 83
WAKEFIELD, R.I. (AP) - When Frank W. Keaney and his University of Rhode Island basketball team appeared in Madison Square Garden, New York fans knew they would see plenty of run-and-shoot action.
Keaney, an apostle of fire house play, upgraded the pace of collegiate basketball by developing the fast break, and in 28 years with the URI Rams, his hard-running players compiled 402 wins and 124 losses.
Tuesday, Keaney died in South County Hospital at age 83.
He had been a notable coach in baseball, football, basketball and track at URI, but his national reputation was built on basketball.
He retired from coaching in 1948 and became athletic director at the University. On June 30, 1956, he retired.
He was the first man inducted into the URI hall of fame in 1960 and shortly thereafter he was one of three coaches and seven players named to the basketball hall of fame at Springfield College.
His university teams went to the National Invitational Tournament in Madison Square Garden in 1941, 1942, 1945 and 1946.
A Phi Beta Kappa at Bates College where he earned his B.A. degree in 1911, Keaney taught at high schools in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island before becoming the one-man physical education staff at the then Rhode Island State College.
He is survived by his widow, Winifred, and two sons, Frank W. Keaney Jr. of Windsor, Conn., and Warner M. Keaney, physical education director at the South Kingstown High School.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Kingston Congregational Church, with burial at New Fernwood Cemetery in West Kingston.
