Veteran Coach Forrest Twogood Dies
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Forrest Twogood, who coached college athletic teams for 37 years and was head basketball coach at the University of Southern California for 16 years, is dead of cancer.
Twogood, who would have been 65 Saturday, died Wednesday at Glendale Memorial Hospital, where he had been treated for the inoperable lymph gland disease since last December.
A native of Sioux City, Iowa, Twogood starred in football, basketball and baseball at the University of Iowa from 1925 to 1929 and joined the USC staff as an assistant baseball and basketball coach in 1929 while playing minor league baseball during the summer.
He was head baseball and basketball coach at the University of Idaho from 1936 to 1942 and at the University of San Francisco from 1942 to 1949 before returning to USC as a basketball assistant. He became head coach upon Sam Barry's death in 1950. His teams compiled a record of 255 wins and 180 losses.
Last month, Twogood was honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches with the Metropolitan Award, given annually for outstanding contributions to basketball over a long period.
Twogood served as president of the coaches association in 1965 and was a member of the NCAA Basketball Tournament Committee for six years.
In 1966, he was elected to the Helms Hall College Basketball Hall of Fame.
Memorial services will be held Saturday on Cromwell Field at USC.
Twogood is survived by his widow, Eleanor, and two sisters, Mrs. Clark Reynolds and Mrs. Lucille Loomis.
