Former I.U. Coach Dies at Age 95
Everett Dean, who coached Stanford University to an NCAA men's basketball championship and I.U. to three Big 10 basketball co-championships, died Tuesday in Caldwell, Idaho, at age 95.
In 1921, he became the first I.U. basketball player to earn All-America honors. Dean, a native of Salem, Ind., went on to become the only coach inducted into both the National Basketball and College Baseball Halls of Fame. He also was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
Dean, who played baseball and basketball for I.U., coached both sports for the Hoosier from 1925 to '38. His basketball Hoosiers went 162-93, with shared Big 10 titles in 1926, '28 and '36. His I.U. baseball teams were 176-93-8 with Big 10 titles in 1925 and '32 and a conference co-championship in '38.
He left I.U. for Stanford, where his basketball teams went 167-120 - 28-4 in 1941-42 national championship season. He added baseball coaching to his Stanford duties in 1950 and held both jobs for two seasons until giving up basketball. When he retired to Salem in 1955, his Stanford baseball teams had a 125-82-4 composite record.
Dean had been hospitalized the last three weeks since suffering a broken arm. He had lived with his daughter in Idaho for the last 2-1/2 years since moving from Salem.
He will be buried Monday in Salem. Memorial donations may be made to the Everett dean baseball and basketball scholarship funds at I.U. and Stanford and the Stevens Memorial Museum in Salem.
