Georgia's Elmer Lampe Dies
Elmer Lampe, one of the more successful Georgia basketball coaches, died Sunday in Boynton Beach, Fla,., after a long illness.
A graduate of the University of Chicago, Lampe was an assistant football coach under the late Wally Butts and also head basketball coach from 1938 to 1946. His Bulldog teams won 82 and lost 84. In 1940, his Georgia club was runner-up to Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference tournament.
Lampe was an all-around athlete at Chicago under the legendary Amos Alonzo Stagg.
At Georgia, he was on the staff and Orange and Rose bowl clubs of 1941-42. He left Georgia after World War II to become head basketball coach at Dartmouth.
Lampe is survived by his wife Gertrude, a son and daughter.
