Former Ole Miss Head Coach Ed Walker Dies
Ed Walker, head football coach at Ole Miss during the 1930 through 1937 seasons, died here Friday morning around 11 a.m. at Baptist Hospital following a massive heart attack.
Walker, 71, was being treated for other ailments at the Jackson hospital when he suffered the heart attack Thursday night.
The Jonesboro, La., native developed several of the finest Rebel teams among them the fine 1935 squad which produced a 9-3 record and became the first Ole Miss bowl team, playing in the 1936 Orange Bowl.
An All-American end at Stanford, Walker served on the football coaching staffs of Stanford, Iowa, and Columbia University before taking over the reins at Ole Miss.
Funeral services are tentative, but will be from the Breland Funeral Home in Canton.
Walker is survived by his widow Georgia Belle Maxwell of Camden, Miss., five brothers and a sister. They are Pyburn Walker of Hodge, La.; L.Z. Walker of Arcadia La.; Edwin O. Walker of Philadelphia, Pa., George T. Walker of Monroe, La., William S. Walker of Winfield, La., and Mrs. Grace Walker of Jonesboro, La.
