Earl Downey, Princeton School Teacher, Succumbs Wednesday
Earl D. Downey, a longtime teacher at Princeton High School and lifetime resident of Princeton died Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. in St. Mary's Hospital, Evansville. Downey was born June 21, 1910 and resided at 520 W. State St.
He graduated from Indiana State University in 1934 after attending DePauw and Oakland City College. He received his master degree from Indiana University.
Downey began teaching social studies following college graduation, at Princeton high school and in 1938 through 1949 was head basketball and track coach. He spent a year in the service 1944-45 and returned to Princeton high school He was again head basketball coach in 1948-49. Since then Downey has taught social studies at PHS.
He was a member of the First United Methodist church, Prince Masonic lodge 231, Scottish Rite and Hadi Shrine of Evansville, Princeton Elks, was the first president of Optimist club, Indiana State Teachers Association, American Federation of Teachers, Phi Delta Kappa and Gibson county chapter chairman of Red Cross. He was a veteran of WW II.
Downey, is survived by his wife, Katherine, and one son, James W. with the U.S. Army in Germany. Also surviving are one brother, Harold of Dayton, Ohio and one sister, Mrs. Don H. Stone, Ft. Branch.
Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. N.I. Schoolfield and Rev. Karl McClure at Kendall Funeral Home, 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15. Burial will be in the Maple Hill cemetery.
