Dale Morey
Dale Morey, 83, a resident of Maryfield Nursing Home in North Carolina for a year, died May 14, 2002, at High Point Regional Hospital in High Point, N.C. He was a former resident of Martinsville, Ind.
Born Dec. 1, 1918, he was the son of Garret Lee and Bessie Rose (Seelye) Morey. In 1953 he married Martha Curry of Indianapolis. She survives in High Point.
Morey excelled at golf and basketball in high school. He attended Louisiana State University on scholarship and was chosen All-American in both sports, playing on three NCAA championship golf teams.
He won Indiana's high school and junior championships before college, and was to receive every other title available to an amateur in his state, including the Indiana Amateur and Open (four each) and the Indianapolis District seven times.
He tried both sports professionally after college but soon canceled the efforts. While awaiting restoration of his amateur status in golf, Morey entered a sales career that was to last a lifetime. In 1958 he founded Dale Morey & Associates, representing manufacturers in the furniture industry.
His most noteworthy year nationally was 1953 when he won the prized Western Amateur among even tournaments and was runner-up to Gene Littler in the U.S. Amateur. In the 35-hole final at Oklahoma City G&CC, Morey birdied the 34th and 35th holes to draw even, but on the 36th Littler birdied from 40 feet for the crown.
He proceeded then to dominate Carolina amateur golf, eventually winning 31 championships in that section, including the North Carolina Amateur (twice), Carolina's Amateur, North Carolina Open and Seniors (seven times) and the State Senior Four Ball on 11 occasions with various partners. He also won state amateur titles in Kentucky and Texas, the Mexican Amateur in 1964, the Middle Atlantic Amateur in 1972 and the Al-American Amateur in 1972 and the All American Amateur in 1943. He also represented this nation in the Walker Cup matches of 1955 and 1965 on two Americas Cup Teams and in the 1964 World Amateur Team Championship.
Turning 55 late in 1973, he terrorized the senior amateur circuit for more than a decade, winning the U.S. Senior Amateur twice, tieing for low amateur in 1984 Senior Open and capturing the 1985 British Senior Amateur.
In the first 10 years as a senior, he was ranked No. 1 senior amateur six times by Golf Digest Magazine. Early in 1980, North Carolina Gov. Jim Hunt bestowed on Morey the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for his representing the state so many years in so distinguished a manner.
Never a long hitter, Morey got even with a deadly short game, notably on long putts. He recorded 13 holes-in-one, and he once scored 59 on a regulation par-72 course. In 1983 American Seniors Stroke Play Championship, at Breakers West in Palm Beach County, he shot his age on his 65th birthday, and the next day he shot 66. He won, of course.
Morey was inducted into the Sports and Golf Hall of Fame in both Indiana and North Carolina.
He served as president and/or the director in the Indiana, Carolinas' Southern and American Senior Golf Associations. He was founding president (now president emeritus) of the society of Seniors, an organization of the continent's very best senior amateurs.
Other survivors include a daughter, Maureen M. Schirtzinger; a son, Douglas Patrick Morey; a sister, Norma Eileen Morey of Bloomington; and a grandson, Robert Dale Morey.
A memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church at the corner of Johnston Street and Skeet Club Road in High Point. The Rev. Joseph Zuschmidt will officiate. A prayer service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday at Sechrest Funeral Chapel, 1301 E. Lexington Ave., High Point, N.C. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.
