Ex-Coach Dies; Service Private
Private services are being arranged for Boyd B. Chambers 79, former University of Cincinnati three-sport coach and long a sporting goods dealer. He had been in ill health, but was stricken unexpectedly Thursday at his home, 2432 Maplewood Ave., M. Auburn, and died a short time later at Deaconess Hospital.
An athlete at Denison University, Granville, Ohio. Mr. Chambers pitched in baseball minor league and managed teams in the Mountain States League, coaching also for eight years at Marshall College in Huntington, W. Va. Then he was at Bethany (W. Va.) College for one year before coming to UC in 1918.
For four years he was head coach, reviving a flagging Bearcat football team. Then he gave his attention exclusively to basketball and baseball. He developed many young athletes who are now leading Cincinnati citizens.
Coach Chambers had a UC basketball record of 106-80. His high season was 17-2 for 1925-26.
In 1928 Mr. Chambers left UC to organize the Cincinnati Athletic Goods Co., 110 W. Fourth St., in which he remained active the rest of his life. He served two terms as president of the Ohio Valley Tennis Association. Through the years since 1928 he remained "Coach" Chambers to old friends, and was called "Coach" by new.
Surviving him are his wife, Edith Marshall Chambers; one son, Marshall Chambers, Charlotte, N.C., and two daughters, Miss Betty Chambers, now teaching in the Philippines, and Mrs. Barbara Cochran, Concord, Calif.
