Bill Chandler Died Saturday
MILWAUKEE (AP) - William S. (Bill) Chandler, 57, Marquette University basketball coach for 21 years before he retired in 1951, died Saturday.
Chandler was listening to the radio report of the Milwaukee baseball game when he felt ill. His wife called a doctor. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.
Death was due to a heart ailment. He suffered a slight heart attack last fall, but apparently was in moderately good health until Saturday afternoon.
A native of Chicago, Chandler starred in basketball at the University of Wisconsin in 1916 and 1918.
In 1919 he coached both basketball and football at what is now River Falls State College. He then moved to Iowa State where he coached basketball for seven years through 1928. In his last year there he was named president of the National Basketball Coaches' Association.
Chandler returned to the University of Wisconsin and received his master's degree in education in 1930. He became basketball coach at Marquette the same year.
He coached many of Marquette's great cage stars, including Gene Ronzani, Ray Morstadt, Bobby Dineen, Dave Quabius, Bill Komenich and Gene Berce.
Chander is survived by his wife, Niola; two sons, Dr. William, Omaha, Neb., and Stanley, Menomonee Falls; a daughter, Mrs. William Herziger of Menasha, and five grandsons.
The funeral will be held here Tuesday afternoon.
